🎉 Happy Tuesday, Insiders!

Today is a special day around here: Riviera Maya Insider is officially two years old!

When I started this newsletter, I wanted to create something useful, upbeat and genuinely local…a place where residents, snowbirds and frequent visitors could keep up with the news, discover new businesses and fun events, and learn how life here really works.

Two years later, you have turned it into a conversation. You answer the polls, guess Where Am I?, send tips, call me out when I get something wrong and let me know when a story helps you make a decision or try something new. Those replies are still one of my favorite parts of the week.

Thank you for opening these emails, sharing them with friends and helping Riviera Maya Insider grow. Here’s to year three and hopefully many more Tuesday mornings together.

— Michele Kinnon

P.S. - None of this would be possible without support from our local sponsors so a massive THANK YOU to Dr. Luigi Palermo with Timeless Beauty, Launa Brockman with Paradise Professional Services and Milly Arceo with Legally in Mexico. Your trust and support mean everything to me.

✨ Laser Hair Removal: Why One Size Doesn't Fit All

If you've ever considered laser hair removal, there's something important to understand: not all lasers work the same way, and not all skin responds the same way to treatment.

Your natural skin tone, the amount of sun exposure you've had, and the color and thickness of your hair all influence which technology will be most effective and safest for you. That's particularly relevant here in the Riviera Maya, where year-round sunshine can change your skin's pigmentation considerably.

At Timeless Beauty, Dr. Luigi Palermo uses an advanced laser platform that incorporates both diode and Nd technologies, allowing treatments to be tailored to different skin types and hair characteristics.

✧ Darker or recently tanned skin may require different settings and additional precautions.
✧ Hair color and thickness matter. Laser treatments generally work best on darker, coarser hair. Very light, gray, or white hair may not respond well.
✧ Multiple sessions are usually necessary because hair grows in cycles, and not every follicle is active at the same time.

Successful laser hair removal starts with understanding your skin, not simply choosing a treatment. Learn more about laser hair removal.

✈️ Should Tulum Airport Drop “Tulum” From Its Name?
A Tulum councilman says the airport’s name gives travelers the wrong idea about where they’ll land and how easily they can reach town. With airlines cutting routes, the debate goes beyond the sign on the terminal: would a new name solve anything travelers are actually dealing with? Read more

🌊 Oceanfront Living in Puerto Aventuras

If you've been watching the Puerto Aventuras real estate market, you know that Punta Roca is one of the most sought-after addresses in town. And it's easy to see why.

This beautiful 2-bedroom, 2.5-bath oceanfront condo offers uninterrupted Caribbean views, the sound of waves just outside your windows, and the privacy of a gated community, all within walking distance of the marina, restaurants, shops and beach.

Located on the third floor with elevator access, the condo is fully furnished, equipped and move-in ready. The single-level layout makes it equally appealing as a full-time residence or a winter retreat.

Residents enjoy beautifully maintained tropical grounds, a heated oceanfront pool and jacuzzi, plus the convenience of two parking spaces, solar power, water filtration and fiber optic internet. It's also rental friendly, offering flexibility for owners who spend only part of the year in Mexico.

Punta Roca has become one of the most desirable places to own in Puerto Aventuras. If you've been waiting for the right opportunity to buy oceanfront, this coastal beauty deserves a closer look.

TRAVEL TALK Sponsored by Launa Brockman

👨‍👩‍👧 Traveling With Children? New Regulations Are Coming.

Families traveling in Mexico may soon need another document check.

Mexico’s Congress has approved a reform requiring tourism service providers, including lodging providers, to verify the relationship between an adult and an accompanying minor. The goal is to prevent the trafficking and sexual exploitation of children in the country. Once the reform is published, official documents will be required to establish kinship, parental authority, guardianship or custody. Without them, the provider is expected to deny service and notify authorities.

Vacation-rental owners and managers should pay attention. The published rule may require independent hosts to request documents before check-in, revise guest instructions and follow reporting procedures. So far, the exact expectations for private rentals and platform bookings remain unclear.

The reform is not yet enforceable and the list of required or accepted documentation has yet to be published. It seems clear that families should be prepared to carry identification and birth certificates or certified copies. Single parents, guardians and adults traveling with someone else’s child should bring custody, guardianship or authorization records.

Vacation rental owners should not change check-in procedures just yet, but they should watch closely for the final rules.

⛴️ Winjet Drops Its 9 PM Cozumel Crossing

Effective October 12, Winjet has suspended its 9 PM crossing between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, citing low passenger numbers and operating costs. It has not said when the sailing might return.

For now, Winjet’s last posted departure from Cozumel is 7 PM.; its last from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel is 8 PM. That leaves less margin for a late dive, dinner on the island or a delay getting to the terminal. Miss the final sailing and an overnight stay may be the only practical fallback.

This is Winjet’s published schedule. Other operators may run differently. Be sure to check the timetable for your exact travel date and direction before making plans.

NOTES ON NAPKINS

🥘 What to Eat During Janal Pixán

Janal Pixán means “food of the souls,” so this is one celebration where the menu is inseparable from the meaning.

The star of the season mucbipollo, also called pib: an enormous tamal made with corn masa and lard, filled with chicken and pork in a seasoned tomato-and-chile sauce, wrapped in banana leaves and traditionally cooked underground. It is first placed on the family altar as an offering; once the souls have “taken the grace” of the food, the family shares it.

Look for tamales de x’pelón, made with fresh black-eyed peas; little steamed tamales called vaporcitos; new-corn atole, a warm, thick drink made from freshly harvested corn; and tan-chucuá, a cacao-spiced version flavored with pepper and anise. Xec is a crisp, refreshing fruit salad made with orange, mandarin and jícama, then finished with chile. Sweets often include candied papaya, coconut or pumpkin seed.

If you want to try mucbipollo, order early. Many local cooks and restaurants prepare limited batches. And remember that these are not simply seasonal specialties. They are foods of harvest, memory and welcome, made to nourish both the living and the returning souls.

🇲🇽 Mexico Residency Now Requires Much Deeper Pockets

The biggest residency cost is not the visa fee—it is qualifying financially.

Published 2026 figures show how high the bar has risen. The Mexican Consulate in Las Vegas asks to see $4,630 USD in monthly income for temporary residency or an average balance of $78,025 USD. For permanent residency through retirement, you must show a monthly pension of at least $7,762 USD or an average balance of $312,169 USD.

Now, those amounts are not universal. Consulates use different currency conversions and sometimes different calculations or interpretations.

As applicants are not universally required to use the nearest Mexican consulate, it may be worth your while to shop it out. Many offices will take applicants from outside their immediate service area, so compare requirements. If another consulate has a more favorable threshold, the trip may be worthwhile. Be aware that some offices restrict appointments to residents of their consular district so contact the office and get confirmation before booking travel.
