🌴 Good morning, Insiders!
This week has held two very different emotions for many people in our region. There is the heartbreak coming out of Venezuela, where families are facing the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. At the same time, there is the shared excitement of watching Mexico continue its strong World Cup run, giving fans across the country a rare and welcome reason to celebrate together.
Both moments remind us of the same thing in different ways: community matters. We show up in joy, we show up in grief, and when people need help, we show up there too.
In today’s email you will find:

👩⚕ State of the Art Laser Hair Removal at Timeless Beauty
After months of hearing the same question—"Do you offer laser hair removal?"—the answer is finally yes.
But true to form, Dr. Luigi Palermo wasn't interested in offering just any laser. He waited until he found a system he felt confident putting his name behind.
Timeless Beauty has introduced the Vasconcellos® laser by Prosmed, an advanced platform that combines three laser technologies in a single device. The result is a treatment designed to be fast, effective, and, most importantly, safe.
One of the biggest advantages is its versatility. The system is suitable for a wide range of skin tones—from fair-skinned visitors escaping the Canadian winter to residents whose skin has been bronzed by years in the Riviera Maya sun. It also performs well on a variety of hair types and colors while remaining remarkably comfortable. In fact, after trying it himself, Dr. Luigi describes the treatment as virtually pain-free.
Different precision handpieces allow treatments on everything from larger areas like the legs, back, and abdomen to delicate facial areas with equal accuracy.
If you've been considering laser hair removal, now is the perfect time to schedule a consultation and learn whether this new technology is right for you.

🇲🇽 Mexico Sends Rescue Teams to Venezuela After Deadly Earthquakes
Mexico has sent more than 250 rescuers, medical personnel, search dogs, aircraft, and supplies to Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes left hundreds dead and thousands injured. The deployment is part of a growing international response and reflects Mexico’s long tradition of sending help during major disasters, from wildfires in the United States and Canada to humanitarian aid for Cuba. 🗳️ Meet the Early Contenders for the 2027 QRoo Gubernatorial Race
The 2027 race for Quintana Roo governor is already taking shape. Five figures from the ruling 4T coalition have registered to seek the nomination, including Cancún Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, Senator Eugenio Segura, former Customs Director Rafael Marín, Federal Deputy Marybel Villegas, and Local Deputy Alexa Murguía. The official campaign is still far away, but this internal contest offers an early look at the names, alliances, and leadership styles likely to shape the next chapter of Quintana Roo politics. 🏗️ Tulum’s Vacation Rental Boom Gets a Hard Reality Check
Tulum’s short-term rental market is showing the strain of years of fast growth. Industry data shows more than 5,100 active vacation rental units in the destination, equal to nearly half of Tulum’s traditional hotel-room inventory. At the same time, occupancy has softened, prices remain high, and visitors are weighing concerns over transportation costs, security, sargassum, and the overall value of the experience. With about 100 more real estate projects still in development, Tulum’s challenge is clear: the easy-money phase is over, and orderly growth matters more than ever. Read more
🎨 Playa del Carmen’s Museum Falls Short
Playa del Carmen has grown into one of the most recognized destinations in the Caribbean, yet it still lacks a true public museum to tell its own story. Local artists and cultural leaders have long pushed for the old municipal palace to become the Centro Cultural y Museo 28 de Julio, a space for history, art, heritage, and community identity. The project has been announced, but progress appears limited. Significant cultural opportunities, like a recent international painting symposium, have gone elsewhere. The space remains a museum in name only. Read more
📚 Maya Language Decline Raises Concerns in Yucatán
The Maya language remains one of Yucatán’s most important cultural pillars, but researchers warn that it is no longer being passed down in many families. New data show that 6 out of 10 children of Maya-speaking mothers are not learning Maya as their first language. While more than half a million people in Yucatán still speak it, most are adults, and many schools still do not teach it despite a state mandate. Experts say reversing the decline will require more than cultural pride. It will take education, visibility, and an end to discrimination. Learn more

💵 New Requirement for Large Cash Transactions
Starting July 1, banks in Mexico will begin requiring official identification for large cash deposits and withdrawals made at bank branches.
This does not apply to normal daily banking, ATM withdrawals, card payments, transfers, or smaller cash movements. The new rule is aimed at cash transactions of 140,000 pesos or more.
So, if you walk into a bank to deposit or withdraw 140,000 pesos or more in cash, be prepared to show a valid official ID, such as an residency card or passport. Likely both. Depending on the bank, you may also be asked for additional verification, including biometric confirmation.
If the ID is expired, missing, or does not match the account information, the bank may refuse the transaction.
The measure was announced by the Mexican Banking Association as part of a broader effort to reduce fraud, identity theft, and money laundering. Large cash movements are considered higher risk because they can be used to hide the origin of money or move funds through the banking system under another person’s name.
For most people, this will not change much. But it is useful to know if you are planning a real estate payment, business transaction, major purchase, or any other large cash deposit or withdrawal.
The rule does not ban large cash transactions. It just means banks will be checking more carefully before processing them.
📱 Cell Phone Registration Deadline Extended. Because Of Course It Was.
After weeks of uncertainty, Mexico has extended the deadline for mandatory cell phone registration. The original cutoff was June 30, but a new staggered schedule was announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum last Thursday.
The new deadline depends on the last digit of your cell phone number, so yes, we now have a countdown calendar based on phone-number roulette.

So, if your number ends in 5, your new deadline is October 31.
If you miss your new deadline, your carrier is expected to suspend the line 72 hours later. During suspension, you should still be able to receive earthquake alerts and call emergency numbers or your provider’s customer service. Regular calls, texts, and mobile data will be restored when registration is completed.
The stated goal of the program is to reduce fraud, extortion, and crimes committed using anonymous mobile lines. Whether this process will actually accomplish that remains to be seen. What is clear is that millions of users were not ready by the original deadline, so the government has opted for a phased extension instead of one massive service cutoff.
Practical advice: do not wait until your deadline. Register only through your phone company’s official channels, and be very careful with messages or calls asking for personal information. A last-minute government deadline extension is exactly the kind of thing scammers love.

🍲 Thursdays Are for Pozole
Pozole is one of Mexico’s great comfort foods, built around nixtamalized corn, or hominy, simmered with meat and served with all the good toppings: oregano, onion, radish, lime, chile, lettuce or cabbage, avocado, and crispy chicharrón. While many states have their own proud versions, Guerrero has taken pozole to another level.
The state is especially known for pozole blanco and pozole verde. Blanco is the simpler, older-style version, with pork, hominy, garlic, onion, herbs, and a clean, rich broth. Verde, a Guerrero favorite, gets its color and flavor from ingredients like tomatillo, green chiles, herbs, and sometimes hoja santa or epazote. Then there is pozole rojo, more commonly associated with places like Jalisco and Michoacán, made with dried red chiles that give it a deeper, earthier flavor.
So why Thursday? That is where jueves pozolero enters the story. Like most good food traditions, its origin depends on who you ask.
The truth is probably somewhere between history, habit, and a very good hangover remedy. One version traces the custom to Iguala in the 19th century, where families began gathering for pozole on Thursdays. Another ties it to the 1821 Embrace of Acatempan, the meeting between Agustín de Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero that helped set Mexico’s independence in motion. A celebratory feast followed on Thursday, complete with pozole served in clay pots.
The less historic (but very relateable) theory is that Wednesday nights have traditionally been a big night out in Acapulco and Thursday pozole became the next-day cure.
Without a doubt, Thursday is pozole day. If I happen to be in Playa, Pozoleria Castillo is where I’m heading for a steaming bowl of the good stuff. It’s more likely that you’ll find me at a big table at Mero Mero with a gaggle of Puerto Aventuras ladies all fighting over the chicharrón. IYKYK.

⛑ Helping Venezuela After the Earthquake
Several readers have reached out asking where they can safely send help for victims of the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela. It is a generous instinct, and in a moment like this, every bit of support matters. It is also a moment to be careful.
In the days after a disaster, donation links, collection drives, WhatsApp messages, and personal fundraisers can spread very quickly. Some are legitimate. Some are well-meaning but poorly organized. And, unfortunately, some are not what they claim to be.
The safest option is to donate through established organizations that are already operating in Venezuela or working with verified local partners. Look for groups that clearly explain how funds will be used, have a public donation page, and provide updates on their response.
Organizations currently connected to Venezuela earthquake relief efforts include:
World Central Kitchen – providing meals through relief teams and local partners.
Save the Children – focused on children and families affected by the earthquakes.
World Vision – supporting emergency response for families impacted by the disaster.
GlobalGiving – managing a Venezuela Earthquake Relief Fund through vetted local partners.
Cáritas Venezuela – Local humanitarian support through Catholic church and community networks.
There is also a GoFundMe campaign connected to We Love Foundation / I Love Venezuela Foundation, which has been widely shared. As with any fundraiser, take a moment to confirm the organizer, beneficiary, and updates before donating.
A few basic rules: donate only through official websites or verified fundraising pages, avoid sending money to private individuals you do not know, do not share sensitive personal information by message, and be wary of urgent pressure tactics.
Helping is good. Helping safely is better. In a crisis, the goal is not just to give quickly. It is to make sure the help actually reaches the people who need it.
🐾 Free Spay & Neuter Campaign in Puerto Morelos
Pet owners in Puerto Morelos have a chance to take advantage of a free spay and neuter campaign for dogs and cats on July 4th and 5th.
The campaign is being organized by La Vet del Puerto and will take place at the Sindicato de Taxistas de Puerto Morelos. This is a great opportunity for local families, rescuers, and animal lovers to help prevent unwanted litters and support the wellbeing of pets in the community.
Advance registration is required. You can register in person at La Vet del Puerto from Monday to Friday between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
A few important restrictions apply. Pets must be between 4 months and 6 years old. Large-breed dogs are not accepted (with some exceptions). Flat-faced, or brachycephalic, pets are also excluded
If you have a dog or cat that qualifies, this is a good time to get them registered. Free sterilization campaigns like this make a real difference for the whole community, helping reduce stray populations and giving more animals a healthier future.
