🌊 Mexico Promises $2 Billion Sargassum Plan
Mexico is investing heavily in a new strategy to intercept sargassum before it reaches Quintana Roo’s beaches. The plan promises more collection vessels, tugboats and up to 50 kilometers of containment barriers focused on Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Mahahual. But when will residents and visitors see results? What is funded, how is the system is expected to work and which important deadlines and operational details remain unclear. Learn more

🌿Campaign Seeks to Halt Ritz-Carlton Development Near Punta Venado
Environmental activists are challenging federal approval for a 429-unit hotel and residential complex near Punta Venado, south of Playa del Carmen. The Ritz-Carlton-branded project would occupy a 180-acre coastal property containing jungle, dunes and protected mangroves. Opponents warn that construction could damage wildlife habitat and underground water systems connecting cenotes to the Caribbean. More than 4,100 people have signed a petition seeking to stop this and another development planned for the Punta Venado-Paamul corridor. Read more

🐾 New Paperwork Required for Dogs Traveling to Mexico
Beginning yesterday, August 3, travelers bringing a dog from the United States into Mexico will need a special veterinary certificate confirming the animal was inspected for New World screwworm. The document must be completed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian within five days of arrival. The change does not apply to cats, but arriving without the correct paperwork could cause delays or problems at the border or airport. Read more

🎭 Playa celebrates Maya Culture and History
Local artists, artisans and performers gathered at the Casa Indígena in Playa del Carmen for an exhibition marking the 179th anniversary of the Maya Social War. The event featured traditional arts, regional food and cultural presentations celebrating the traditions of local Maya communities. More commonly known as the Caste War, the conflict began on July 30, 1847, continued in different stages until 1901 and remains an important part of Quintana Roo’s history. Read more

🚆 Maya Train Restaurant Service Launch Date Set
The Maya Train will launch its Janal restaurant service on August 23 with a culinary trip between Mérida and Izamal led by Yucatecan chef David Cetina. The menu will highlight regional dishes served aboard a train designed specifically for dining. The direct Cancún-Playa del Carmen service returns August 15 with two departures in each direction, including new early-morning times. Additonal shuttle connections are also in the works for Plaza Playacar, the Cancun Hotel Zone and other key stops. Learn more

🪸 New Restoration Project Aims to Protect Banco Chinchorro
Mexico’s largest reef complex is getting some much-needed attention for its 30th anniversary. A new restoration and monitoring program will run through June 2028, bringing together scientists, conservation groups and 55 local fishermen. Located 19 miles off Mahahual, Banco Chinchorro protects an extraordinary mix of coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, wildlife and centuries-old shipwrecks. The project will focus on coral recovery, water quality, storm response and community surveillance. Read more

There is no need to rule out a Riviera Maya vacation during hurricane season. You can find some of the year’s best rates, but there are obvious risks to consider. The best protection begins when you book.

Choose airfare and accommodations that can be changed or canceled without losing the full amount. Before reserving a hotel or vacation rental, ask what happens if a hurricane warning is issued, the airport closes or you must leave early. Get the answer in writing. I’m a big fan of Booking.com but booking directly may also make changes easier than negotiating through a third-party platform.

Consider travel insurance as soon as you make your first nonrefundable payment. Look specifically for trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage related to severe weather. Read the covered reasons and benefit limits carefully. A standard policy generally will not pay simply because you are nervous about traveling.

During the week before departure, follow the National Hurricane Center for weather updates. If a storm develops, check your airline’s travel alerts for a waiver covering your airport and dates. Do not cancel voluntarily before understanding your options. If the airline cancels a flight to or from the United States and you decline its replacement itinerary, you are entitled to a refund.

Even with insurance, keep enough credit available for an unplanned hotel stay or a different route home. Hurricane-season rates can be tempting, but a deeply discounted reservation is no bargain if a storm leaves you unable to change your plans or recover your money. Read the terms before you book, insure the expenses you cannot afford to lose and give yourself room to pivot.

Security deposits in the Riviera Maya have an unfortunate habit of disappearing somewhere between “in process” and “we’re still checking everything.”

By the time a lease ends, that money may no longer be sitting untouched, ready to return. The owner may claim deductions for repainting, worn furniture, unpaid utilities, HOA fees or damage the tenant insists was already there.

So, who is in the right?

Quintana Roo law offers tenants more protection than many realize, but your best defense begins before you sign the lease. Clear deposit terms, a detailed inventory and thorough move-in photos and video can make all the difference. Treat the home exactly as you would a rental car: document every scratch, stain, broken appliance and cracked tile before you unpack.

One of Mexico’s most anticipated culinary seasons is beginning, and local restaurants are already announcing their chiles en nogada.

This famously patriotic dish features a roasted poblano pepper filled with picadillo, usually made with seasoned meat, fruits, nuts and spices. It is covered in a creamy walnut sauce and finished with fresh parsley and ruby-red pomegranate seeds, recreating the green, white and red of the Mexican flag.

According to the most widely told story, chiles en nogada were created by Augustinian nuns in Puebla in 1821 to honor Agustín de Iturbide following the signing of the document that established Mexico’s independence. As with many beloved recipes, the details are still debated, but the dish’s place in Mexican culinary history is not.

Chiles en nogada are traditionally served from late July through September, when walnuts and pomegranates are in season. Every chef has a slightly different interpretation, which gives us an excellent excuse to try more than one.

Watch for seasonal menus throughout the Riviera Maya, but don’t wait too long. Once the pomegranates disappear, so do the chiles.

Food lovers have plenty to look forward to this month, including ceviche and cocktail competitions, two special dinners in Puerto Morelos, a full day devoted to pulque and a chef’s table in Playa del Carmen. Reservations are required for several of these events, so don’t wait too long if something catches your eye.

El Cangrejito Playero Ceviche Contest — Friday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m. · Isla Mujeres. Local cooks and chefs will compete with their best ceviche recipes as part of the island’s 176th-anniversary celebrations. Admission details have not yet been announced.

Tour of Asia: Pop-Up Dinner with Chef Umberto — Wednesday, August 12 at 6 p.m. · KI Restaurant at Ojo de Agua Beach Club, Puerto Morelos. The multi-course menu travels through Asia with ahi tuna crudo, Malaysian roti, dumplings, bulgogi beef and more. $700 MXN per person, excluding drinks. ($)

1st Isleño Cocktail Contest — Thursday, August 13 at 7:30 p.m. · Isla Mujeres. Mixologists and bartenders will create original cocktails inspired by the flavors and character of the island. Admission details have not yet been announced.

Pre-Hispanic Dinner and Show — Friday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m. · Pulquería Tlacoyo Azul, Puerto Morelos. This special dinner pairs traditional dance with a menu featuring blue corn tlacoyos, grasshopper sopes, pozole, nicuatole and other pre-Hispanic-inspired dishes. $900 MXN per person. ($)

Pulque Festival and 7th Anniversary of Pulquería Tlacoyo Azul — Saturday, August 22 from noon to 8 p.m. · Puerto Morelos. Sample natural pulque and five flavored curados while enjoying Mexican food, live music, a DJ and traditional dance. Admission information has not been posted. ($)

Chef’s Table Dinner at YUM YUM by George — Friday, August 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. · Playa del Carmen. The evening includes an exclusive four-course dinner with a wine pairing selected for each dish. $980 MXN per person, excluding gratuity. ($)

The school year is still several weeks away, and Itzé Nah needs our help supporting the 54 local children participating in its summer workshops.

While their parents are at work, the children spend their days enjoying educational and recreational activities, making friends and creating some happy summer memories. Itzé Nah is currently collecting food, drinks and basic supplies to keep the program running smoothly.

Donations may include bottled water and garafones, fresh fruit, juice boxes, milk, cookies, cereal bars, bread, ham, cheese and vegetables. The organization also needs toilet paper, hand soap, dish soap, floor cleaner, disinfectant, garbage bags, napkins and paper towels.

You can bring donations directly to Itzé Nah or send a WhatsApp message to 984 233 8126 to coordinate delivery. If you are inside Puerto Aventuras, you can also drop off contributions at Restaurante Latitude 20° in the Secret Waters Plaza.

If you are not in the local area and would like to help, monetary donations can be made through the official Itzé Nah website.

A case of water, a bag of fresh fruit or a few boxes of juice may not feel like much, but with 54 children attending these workshops, every donation will be put to good use.

Uniqueness Fest 2026 in Puerto Morelos — Friday, Aug 7, 2026–Sunday, Aug 9, 2026 · Cenotes Zapote Prehistoric Park, Ruta de los Cenotes, Puerto Morelos. This three-day family-friendly festival blends live music, art, ancestral ceremonies, workshops, wellness, nature, and activities for children and teens. The current three-day pass is $2,222 MXN plus a $55.55 service fee and includes camping and parking; guests under 15 attend free. ($)

Cozumel Festival del Arrecife 2026 — Saturday, Aug 8, 2026 · Various locations, Cozumel. The second edition offers a full day of creative workshops plus a gathering for local and visiting artists from across the Yucatán Peninsula. Workshops and activities are free and open to the public; check the organizer’s updates for individual locations and times.

San Joaquín Bacalar Expo Fair 2026 — Thursday, Aug 13, 2026–Tuesday, Aug 18, 2026 · Bacalar. Six days of free concerts, folkloric performances, exhibitions, amusement rides, regional food, sporting events, and traditional processions celebrate Bacalar’s patron saint. Concert admission is free; food, rides, and purchases cost extra.

Tercia de Doñas at Buzo’s — Friday, Aug 14, 2026 · Buzo’s Restaurant-Bar, Playa del Carmen. La Tía Chayo, Puruxona Cahuich, and Dominga Dzipiris take the stage at 10:00 p.m. for an adults-only night of Yucatecan comedy and playful audience interaction. Tickets are $385 MXN. ($)

Luis Zunher’s Tribute to Ricardo Arjona — Saturday, Aug 15, 2026 · Hotel Casa Kaoba, Playa del Carmen. Settle in for more than two and a half hours of Ricardo Arjona favorites, plus several of Luis Zunher’s own songs. Reggae Beach Session — Saturday, Aug 15, 2026 · Parque Fundadores, Playa del Carmen. Celebrate Caribbean and Mexican sound-system culture with selectors, DJs, and MCs beside the sea from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Borracho Bingo & BBQ — Saturday, Aug 15, 2026 · Restaurante Casa Chilam Balam, Puerto Morelos. Puerto Morelos gets a rowdier adults-only bingo night with drinks, barbecue-inspired food specials, music, Western and Tex-Mex trivia, and three rounds with cash prizes. The fun starts at 6:00 p.m.; space is limited and advance reservations are required.

The Jazz Jam Connective 2026 — Sunday, Aug 16, 2026 · Caché Hotel Boutique, Playa del Carmen. The fourth edition brings together Carolina Mercado, Zoar Miranda, Mora Jazz, Renatta Rivera, and a vinyl jazz session from MICH SLKTR. Advance tickets are $200 MXN or $300 MXN on the day; confirm the start time with the organizer. ($)
