🔥 Quintana Roo Firefighters Answer Canada’s Call
Sixteen wildland firefighters from Quintana Roo have been selected to join Mexico’s international response to Canada’s severe wildfire season. Thirteen are already in the country, supporting operations in British Columbia and Ontario, while three are expected to join a later deployment. They are part of nearly 400 Mexican personnel sent to Canada across four rotations as the country confronts hundreds of active fires and its highest national preparedness level. Learn more

✈️ Puerto Aventuras Airfield Project Is Back on the Radar
After years of delays, work on the unfinished airfield west of Puerto Aventuras is moving forward again. The privately funded project is intended to replace Playa del Carmen’s increasingly hemmed-in municipal runway, but officials have not announced a firm opening date. For local residents, the bigger questions are what kind of air traffic it will handle and how the project could affect the community. Read more

🦠 Federal Health Teams Investigate Cyclospora Reports
Federal health investigators continue to investigate hotels and resorts in Quintana Roo after 48 British travelers diagnosed with cyclosporiasis reported recent travel to Mexico, many staying in Cancún or the Riviera Maya. No one hotel, restaurant or food supplier has been identified as the source. The intestinal illness is commonly linked to contaminated food or water and can cause prolonged or recurring diarrhea. One of the Riviera Maya’s most celebrated restaurants has packed its knives and moved south. After more than 18 years in Puerto Morelos at Azul Beach Resort, Le Chique, from acclaimed chef Jonatán Gómez Luna, has relocated to Hotel Xcaret Arte, joining the resort’s already impressive collection of high-end restaurants.

Le Chique earned its Michelin star by taking Mexican cuisine in some very unexpected directions, and the new version is every bit as ambitious. The experience revolves around a multi-course tasting menu that travels through Mexico from north to south, with plenty of theatrical presentation, inventive technique and a few surprises along the way.

And good news for locals: you do not have to be staying at Hotel Xcaret Arte to dine at Le Chique. Reservations are open to the general public, making this one of the Riviera Maya’s most serious special-occasion dining options accessible.

If Le Chique has been sitting on your “maybe someday” list, this might be the moment.

The departure of Michelin-starred Le Chique marks the end of an era for Puerto Morelos. Fortunately, the local dining scene is not standing still. Several new restaurants and refreshed concepts have recently opened around town, giving us a few more places to add to the list.

La Vita al Mare is a handsome new Italian restaurant near the dock at the southern end of Rafael E. Melgar. The menu includes wood-fired pizzas, lasagna, fresh seafood, salads and craft cocktails, served in an elegant but comfortable setting. Early reports have been very encouraging.

A little farther north, Lonchería Sandro has taken up residence at Layla Guesthouse. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sandro offers a casual menu of tacos, burgers, tostadas, snacks and cocktails. It looks like an easy option when you want something relaxed without settling for another meal at home.

Local favorite Coxicoatl has also entered a new chapter. This is not an entirely new business, but the locally owned restaurant recently opened in a larger location with an expanded menu. Its grilled meats and handmade tortillas remain central to the concept, joined by seafood and some more unexpected creations—including lobster pizza.

Finally, Matea has reinvented itself as Matea Mayan Fire Grill. The new concept officially launched August 8, pairing an international buffet with grilled specialties and plenty of live-fire flavor.

Puerto Morelos has never depended on a single stand-out restaurant. Its real strength has always been the variety of independently run places, ambitious local chefs and restaurateurs willing to try something new. These four additions suggest there is still plenty cooking.

If you have an immigration procedure coming up in Playa del Carmen, arrive prepared—and do not assume your experience will be the same as it was last time.

According to Milly Arceo of Legally in Mexico, most applications now require the applicant’s three most recent bank statements with a simple Spanish translation. Canje, notifications and replacement-card procedures are among the exceptions.

Processing times have also become less predictable. Some residency cards are still issued the same day, while other applications may take up to two weeks. This is especially important for families: applications for spouses, children and other dependents generally cannot be completed until the principal applicant has received their residency card. If that card is delayed, dependent appointments may need to be rescheduled.

Immigration officials are also paying closer attention to how much time temporary and permanent residents spend outside Mexico. Applicants renewing temporary residency, applying for permanent residency or requesting an exit permit while another procedure is pending may be asked to explain their travel patterns and connection to Mexico.

Milly also reports that temporary residency renewals are currently being granted for one year at a time. Fee discounts remain available only when applicants provide the required supporting documents, which may include apostilled and translated marriage or birth certificates and, in some cases, a consular letter.

Requirements can change quickly and may vary by office and individual case. Confirm what you need before attending your appointment.

Victoria and her daughter, Reina, recently received something they desperately needed: a safe home of their own in the community of El Sauce.

Victoria uses a wheelchair and lives with arthritis and other health challenges. Reina, who also has cognitive limitations, is her mother’s full-time caregiver. Her son, Gonzalo, works hard to support the family financially. The three have faced a great deal together, making the completion of their new home especially meaningful.

Through WOW Mexico, the family was connected with a partner organization that raised the money needed to build the house. The construction is now complete, but the home is still very simply furnished.

Victoria and Reina could use a small table and chairs, a twin-size bed, a compact sofa, kitchen supplies, dishes, blankets and other basic household items. If you have something in good condition that is no longer being used, it could make an immediate and very practical difference in their lives.
