🛥 Are You A Riviera Maya Boat Owner?
If you’re a boat owner, you know. It’s not just a boat. It’s a lifestyle. If you have a recreational vessel, it’s worth protecting and you should be certain about how your insurance coverage actually works.
Most marinas, Puerto Aventuras included, require liability insurance as part of your dock agreement. That coverage protects others if your vessel causes damage to neighboring boats, docks, marina infrastructure, or if someone is injured.
What liability insurance does not cover is your own boat.
Hull or “full” coverage protects your vessel from collision, theft, fire, storm damage, or total loss. Some policies are written at agreed value, others at depreciated value. Deductibles and “named-storm” terms can vary significantly.
Many boat owners carry the minimum required liability coverage without reviewing whether their own asset is adequately protected.
Launa Brockman with Paradise Professional Services works with boat owners to review both liability requirements and optional hull coverage so you understand exactly what’s protected and what isn’t.

You’ve spent good money on the boat of your dreams. Don’t let the wrong coverage leave you grounded.

🌪️ 2026 Hurricane Forecast for the Mexican Caribbean
Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional is calling for 11 to 15 named storms in the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, with up to two major hurricanes possible. While El Niño conditions may limit storm formation in the Caribbean, unusually warm waters in the Atlantic could still fuel powerful systems. 💦 New Water Park Planned at Riviera Maya Resort
Hard Rock Riviera Maya has submitted plans to build a large-scale water park on its property, a move that reflects a growing trend among resorts to offer more on-site entertainment—especially during sargassum season. The project, now under review by environmental authorities, would transform part of the resort into a high-capacity, family-focused attraction. As resorts adapt to changing environmental conditions, the focus is shifting toward broader, all-weather appeal. Read more
🌊 Turning Sargassum Into Big Business
A new initiative called Caribe Circular aims to flip the script on one of the region’s biggest problems—sargassum. Backed by major hotel groups, restaurants, and federal agencies, the program plans to transform seaweed into industrial raw materials like bioplastics, bioenergy, and agricultural inputs. The goal is ambitious: process up to 2 million tons annually and create thousands of jobs while reducing the environmental and financial strain on the tourism sector. Learn more

⚒ Labor Day Reminder
Labor Day in Mexico, or Día del Trabajo, is observed every year on May 1. This year, it falls on a Friday.
For Riviera Maya residents, it’s a straightforward federal holiday with a few practical impacts. Public and private schools are closed, along with government offices and most municipal services. Banks will also be closed for the day, so plan ahead if you need to handle anything in person.
This year, the schools are taking a mega-puente to recognize Labor Day as well as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla which is May 5. That means the kids are off Friday and Monday.
Because this region is tourism dependent, supermarkets, convenience stores, and most restaurants stay open, especially in touristy areas. That said, smaller local businesses that do not serve travelers may choose to close or operate on reduced hours.
If you’re an employer, keep in mind that May 1 is a mandatory rest day under Mexican labor law. Employees who do work are entitled to triple pay.

TRAVEL TALK

🌉 Cancún’s Nichupté Bridge Finally Set to Open
After years of congestion and a single access road to the Hotel Zone, Cancún is about to see a major change in how people move around the city. The Nichupté Vehicular Bridge will officially open on May 3, with President Claudia Sheinbaum expected to attend the festivities.
The bridge creates a direct connection between the Kabah interchange and Km 13 of the Hotel Zone near Plaza Kukulkán. For residents, tourism workers, and visitors, this means shorter travel times and a reliable alternative when Kukulkán Boulevard backs up. It also adds a second evacuation route, something Cancún has needed for years.
Travels should feel the change immediately. Transfers between the airport, downtown, and the Hotel Zone will become more predictable. Excursions will run smoother. Delays caused by accidents or heavy traffic won’t bring everything to a standstill. It also makes daily commutes easier for thousands of workers who keep the tourism industry running, which translates into more consistent service across hotels, restaurants, and tours.
That said, the project has drawn criticism. The final cost has climbed to over 12 billion pesos, more than double the original estimate, raising questions about oversight and planning. Some observers note the inauguration is moving ahead while portions of the supporting infrastructure are still being completed. Environmental concerns have also been raised about long-term impacts on the Nichupté lagoon, despite mitigation efforts.
Key Stats:
Construction began: August 2022
Total length: 11.2 km
Elevated section over Nichupté lagoon: 8.8 km
Lanes: 2 plus 1 reversible lane
Includes bike path and pedestrian walkway
Final cost: Over 12 billion pesos (original budget 5.5 billion)
The bridge addresses a real need, even as debate continues around its cost and execution.
NOTES ON NAPKINS
🍽️ Restaurant Shake Up In Puerto Aventuras
Things are moving around in Puerto Aventuras’ dining scene. PAMPA Fuego & Bar has been relocated into the former Refresh space in Central Park Plaza, bringing its Argentinean flavors a bit closer to their fan base. Taking its place, a new seafood concept, Cosecha del Mar, is stepping in, filling the culinary gap left when Los Aguachiles abandonned their marina-front spot.
Cosecha del Mar is part of the same restaurant group behind Pampa, Ushi Sushi and Pippos, so expect a familiar level of execution with a focus on fresh seafood. Of course, I’ve already got the menu in hand. Pop me an email if you would like a preview!

🌽 Ashes, Maíz & Ancestral Flavor
There are dinners… and then there are experiences.
On Friday, May 1st Pulquería Tlacoyo Azul is hosting a prehispanic-inspired tasting dinner that leans fully into Mexico’s ancestral pantry. Think blue corn tlacoyos with nopales and queso. Mini sopecitos topped with guacamole, chapulines and gusanos. A plantain empanada bathed in house-made mole and finished with sesame. Pozole rojo steaming in a clay bowl. And for dessert? Nicuatole from Oaxaca and pan de muerto rolled in totomoxtle ash with sweet potato and guava jam.
This six-course dinner (with non-alcoholic drinks included) will be accompanied by an Aztec dance presentation, adding movement and ritual to the table. At 900 pesos per person, it’s a chance to taste ingredients that predate modern Mexican cuisine, presented with intention rather than novelty.
If you’re curious about where Mexican food really begins, this is a great way to find out.
📍 Tlacoyo Azul is located on the corner of Av. J. Zetina Gasca and Calle Tortuga in Puerto Morelos
